Wedding Photographer Attire Guide

First impressions are everything. Like it or not, your wedding photographer outfit matters more than you think.

I’ve actually had clients ask what I wear to weddings before they agree to book me. Because your outfit is part of the experience. It tells people if you’re professional, if you understand the environment you’re stepping into, and honestly, if you’re going to be a trustworthy presence or a liability.

Wedding days are already high emotion, high pressure, and high stakes. The last thing you want is to stand out for the wrong reason, be uncomfortable, or look like you don’t belong. Your goal is simple: blend in, look polished, move well, and be taken seriously.

The Goal: Look Elevated, Not Loud

You’re not trying to look like a guest. You’re also not trying to look like you’re in a TikTok “fit check.” You’re working. You’re representing your business. And you’re going to be in the background of people’s memories and photos all day. So the vibe is: fashionable yet professional. Clean. Neutral. Modest. Put-together. If you ever wonder “is this too much?” or “is this too casual?” ask yourself this: Would I want my wedding photographer showing up in this? If the answer is even slightly no… don’t wear it.

Your Color Palette (Be Boring On Purpose)

Weddings are not the place for bright colors. They photograph loud, pull attention, and can look unprofessional.

Lean toward:
✔ Black
✔ Navy
✔ Dark neutrals
✔ Professional, modest tones

Stay away from:
✗ Bright colors
✗ White (just don’t. ever.)
✗ Red (also loud and attention-grabbing)

My Personal Pet-Peeve: Shoes

Shoes are where many photographers mess up constantly. If your feet hurt, get insoles. Get better shoes! Bring a backup pair! But don’t show up looking like you’re running errands! My favorite pair of shoes for a wedding day is a nice pair of GH Bass loafers. They took some breaking in, but once they had been worn in a bit I was able to wear them for full wedding days.

Lean towards:
✔ Closed-toe
✔ Dress shoes (yes, even if you’re “more of a sneaker person”)
✔ Comfortable enough for 10 hours
✔ Stable + grippy (because wedding venues love stairs and random outdoor terrain)

Stay away from:
✗ Sneakers
✗ Doc Martens
✗ Flip flops
✗ Anything that screams casual

Modesty

You’re working around families, churches, older relatives, and formal spaces. And you’re bending, crouching, lifting cameras, moving constantly. You should not be adjusting your outfit every 5 seconds. You should look good and feel secure all day.

Lean towards:
✔ Higher necklines
✔ Straps that cover bra straps
✔ Dresses/skirts that aren’t short
✔ Blazers or layers
✔ Clothing you can move in without worrying

Stay away from:
✗ Spaghetti straps
✗ Low-cut tops
✗ Short skirts
✗ Anything sheer or clingy that shifts a lot when you move

Hard No’s

If you want to be taken seriously, you have to dress like it.

✗ Jeans
✗ T-shirts
✗ Shorts
✗ Loungewear

Your outfit affects how people treat you on a wedding day. It affects how much couples trust you. It affects whether coordinators respect you. It affects whether guests move for you, listen to you, and cooperate. So yes—it matters. Wear something that says: “I’m a professional, I’m calm, and I’ve got this.”

I cannot wait to hear more about you!

Thank you so much for your interest in having me as your wedding photographer! Once you submit this form, I'll be able to let you know if I am available for your wedding date. I limit the number of weddings I take on per year in order to give my clients the experience they deserve.

It is also important to me that we are a good fit for each other, so the next step will be to hop on the phone and get to know each other a little bit.
